The publication describes the long way to foundation of an independent university of economics in Czechoslovakia in 1953 on the background of a general overview of the history of higher economic education not only in the First Czechoslovak Republic that become, in fact, the cradle of an actually autonomous teaching of business and economic disciplines at university level. The publication depicts briefly also earlier history of higher education in economic or business and economic disciplines from their very beginning, i.e. from mid-17th century to break-up of Austria-Hungary. Particular attention is paid not only to the basic form or to the transformations and issues of the First-Republic university education but also to the issues of foundation and operation of the Business University in Prague (VŠO), predecessor of the later VŠE. Subsequently, the turbulent period after World War II, or after 1948, is discussed in detail, as that period preceded the actual foundation of the University of Economics in Prague in 1953.
